PS-OCT systems for retinal imaging can be custom designed and built. In practice, I build these as a consultant. For a standard system, a complete build takes about two weeks to a month. For a custom system equipped with adaptive optics, the time to build roughly doubles. I have built all my systems for human retinal imaging, but can change the optics for small animal imaging.
Our Stokes-vector based PS-OCT systems are easy to use. They can quantify the cumulative phase retardation induced by birefringent tissue. They can also measure the relative fast axis orientation of tissue and the birefringence of tissue. They excel at measuring tissue that is easy to segment, such as the nerve fiber layer and the RPE-Bruch's membrane complex. We also managed to analyze the birefringence of retinal blood vessel walls.
